I would like to plant a Mahonia in my small garden but have room for only one so which one I select is rather important.
Should I have Mahonia japonica which flowers from Autumn to Spring or should I go for Mahonia aquifolium which only flowers in Spring but has a greater abundance of flowers in that one season.
As a plant I personally prefer japonica but that is not the point so suggestions as to which the BBs would prefer would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

I guess it depends where you are in the country, Sparrow. In parts of southern England, bumblebees can be active all year round, so japonica could benefit those that are active in winter. But if you live somewhere with real winter (and no bees!), then the aquifolium could be good, because it flowers in springtime - just in time for the emerging queens. If you do get one of these, let us know how you get on with it.
Thank you Anthony. I am in South Oxfordshire so will plant a japonica.
Best wishes
