Hi

Just joined the forum as we have some new visitors making home behind the fascia boards in a corner of the house and would be interested in finding out what they are.

Thanks

Dear Ritzbee,

Firstly, welcome to the forum !

Secondly, your puzzling bee is a very dark form of Bombus hypnorum, the Tree Bumblebee.

This species has only been in the UK since about 2001, but has been doing astonishingly well here.
It has already colonised England, many parts of Wales; and last year made it to Scotland.

It tends to use old bird nests in bird boxes as a nest location, but also uses house lofts - where it can use the loft insulation to keep the colony warm.  So this is probably what your bees are doing behind the fascia boards.

You should be able to learn more about them in the article I wrote, the current version of which is accessible in this website via About Bees, then FAQs.
Here is a direct link:

Assuming your colony keeps going, later this month you should start to see the Drone Cloud behaviour - which is an amazing spectacle and a real example of the fecundity of nature !

I hope you will enjoy interacting with your new bee-tenants !

Yours         Clive
