Red Tailed Cuckoo Queen?

Hi, this lovely looking thing was seen in our garden a few weeks back, sent it in to beewatch but had no reply as yet. (apologies for the fuzziness, it was taken in a hurry!)

Noticed it because it was quite big and looked very black (a bit like one we saw in Turkey but that’s a different story).
It has an orange tail (obviously) and very dark wings. Males don’t have the dark wings.
You can see the light greyish ribbing on it’s abdomen…

Can’t see past a Red Tailed Cuckoo queen, very unusual for up here in the Edinburgh area but there doesn’t seem to be any other alternative!

Hi Bzzz,

You probably haven’t had any takers for your query because unfortunately, the photo is really too blurred.  Did you check out the hind legs- were they hairy or did they have pollen baskets?  Cuckoos versus true bumbles.  Sorry that I cannot help.

Hi, hind legs, not sure, was all a bit fast but no pollen baskets! I’d say definitely a cuckoo as had very dark smokey wings!
