After trying to get bees to nest in the garden for many years without success (having tried numerous commercial bumble bee nests) I was amazed to hear a loud buzzing coming from our old conical, plastic compost bin. There’s a small amount of old compost in the bottom, but after a party last year, I threw in a lot of (so-called) biodegradable plastic beakers. The bees are entering through a hole in the ground at the base of the bin and appear to be nesting in the beakers. If I take the t0p off the bin and peep in the bees get annoyed and fly out, though I haven’t been stung yet.
Would they have stuffed the beakers with some kind of bedding?
The bees have white tails.
