Hello! As a birthday gift, I have been given a 60cm diameter whisky barrel plant container, and told to choose what plants to go into it.
The tricky thing is that it will not be in my garden - it will be at my local country park, and so on display to the public (it also means it needs to be low maintenance, as I won’t be there everyday).
Site: north of Glasgow, so potentially long, hard frosts in winter and cool, damp summers.
I’d like it to be as bumblebee friendly as possible, and plan to put up a bumblebee info/ID poster next to it.
So - ideas for planting, please!
I was thinking pulmonaria/lungwort for spring,
maybe foxgloves or salvias or globe thistles for summer
and perhaps hebe for late summer - but would this be a good container plant?
I would really value ideas as to what to ask for.
What a lovely gift .
Try underplanting with grape hyacinth ,allium ,frittilaria ,crocus bulbs .
How about some ling heather or ribes ,pulmonaria for early food .
Herbs are always good value (oregano ,thyme ,rosemary, sage )and need no attention and keep their foliage all year .
I think Hebe would be good , foxgloves are great ,might need staking though .
Lavender does well for me in containers .
Im in Glasgow ,let me know when its ready and Ill visit it !
Thanks. marym, for these great suggestions! I shall certainly pass on your ideas to the gift-giver. I will let you know once the container is planted up and in position.
Thanks Malcolm, good point I will see if I can discover their origin.
